Our Story

A mother-daughter adventure

Back to Dirt Farm started in 2019 with a simple dream—to fill our fields with flowers and share their beauty with others. As a family-run farm, we’re always chasing the magic of new varieties, growing as many as we can to make them more available for home gardeners. Whether you’re planting for the first time or adding to a well-loved garden, we hope our seeds bring a little more color, joy, and wonder to your world.

After 4 amazing years of growing sweet peas and sharing the beauty with all of you, it’s time for a new chapter. Life changes (and a new job, yay!) are leading me to step away from farming professionally. I’ll still be growing for my own joy, but the seeds I’ve shared will no longer be available for sale. Growing sweet peas is like adding a little magic to your garden! These beauties aren’t just eye candy with their vibrant colors—they fill the air with a sweet, nostalgic fragrance that’s hard to resist. Whether climbing a trellis or tumbling over a fence, they bloom like crazy, making bouquets you'll want to fill every room with. Plus, they’re easy to grow and save seed from. Plant some, and let your garden smell as beautiful as it looks!

This year we tried some new things in the field including different plant spacings and cover cropping. As with anything in farming, sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. Unfortunately this year, it didn't work out well. The severe drought, deer, and trials have led to probably the worst seed harvest we have had since starting the farm 😪. But we are going to be optimistic for next year and make sure to learn from this year. With all that, make sure if you see a variety you to grab it early and be flexible! Even if you don't get the 'unicorn' cough cough kings ransom... every variety has something special to offer 🥰

It won't be too much longer before we are harvesting seed pods! This variety, Promise, is one of the most stunning bicolors we grow. This white + pink bloom is gorgeous as both garden decor and in a vase 🌸

I was out weeding the sweet peas this morning and got side tracked enjoying the pollinator garden we created on the farm. We leave the flowers for the bees, butterflies, and birds to enjoy all year round as part of our effort to improve the land we are so fortunate to be able to grow on 🥰

Variety: Tutti Frutti

One of the reasons I love this variety is because it's sooo eye catching whether you have 1 or 100 plants. The unique orangey flaked color is very bright and cheerful 😊 Farmer favorite color combo Tutti Frutti + Just Julia + Restormel

Variety: Just Julia

There's something so beautiful about sweet peas on a misty day. This variety, Just Julia, is a really pretty mid blue with purple undertones 💙 Available on our website www.backtodirtfarm.com

Variety: Ella Mountbatten
This variety was bred by Roger Parsons over in the UK. It is a gorgeous pink and muave bicolor. An interesting note about Ella is that temperature changes her color. In warmer temperatures the pink and make take on a paler shade.

Kings Ransom 👑 This is my second year growing it. I swear its even prettier this year than last. Its more smokey in real life and a very unique color.

In case you didn't know, we grow our sweet peas at Gnomelicious Lavender Farm in Sequim. You can visit in person and purchase seeds in the gift shop from now through August 10.

We're headed into a sunny and warm 4th of July weekend 😎 Make sure to plan on giving your plants some extra water in the afternoon so their roots stay cool and can take advantage of this heat to boost growth 🌱

Fun fact: we own both Back to Dirt sweet peas and Gnomelicious Lavender. When you visit you'll get to see not only the sweet peas but also lavender, wildflowers, and the perrenial pollinator garden

We haven't grown this one since 2020 and definitely won't be waiting that long again 🤩 This variety is called Lunar Blue 💙

We have our fist blooms on most of the varieties! Blue shift always puts on a stunning show 💙

Got our first flowers from selfseeded plants in the tunnel 😄 It will be interesting to see how the plant grows with no trellis...

Our field planted sweet peas are slowly growing 🐌 Hopefully we will get some warmer temperatures to speed things up 🌞

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Want to see the new greenhouse(high tunnel) and a peak at farm life? We need helpers on Wednesday at 4pm to raise the plastic on the new greenhouse. It should take about an hour with everyone's help 😀 Everyone who comes will get a packet of seeds to take home and our eternal gratitude 🥰

What to expect: please wear closed toed shoes and casual clothes. Hopefully we won't be getting dirty... You will be helping us use rope and tennis balls to pull the plastic up and over the top.

A week since planting and our sweet peas are looking happy! We finished planting all of the outside peas woohoo 🌱 We will be working on finishing building the new high tunnel for the next couple of weeks so we can finish planting the rest inside. 🌸 Can't wait to be surrounded by all of the beautiful wonderful smelling flowers in a couple of months!

The pea starts are looking really good. If all goes to plan, I'll be transplanting out into the field on Sunday! Pictured above is a start that has self branched. This happens when you grow the sweet peas in cooler temperatures. If you have some starts that haven't branched on their own, you should "pinch" them. The plant will need to have 3-4 sets of leaves before you pinch! To pinch, all you do is snip the top of the plant off. Make sure there are still 1-2 sets of leaves remaining so the plant can still photosynthesis 🌱

Fun fact: the majority of the seeds we germinated for our farm use were from seed saved in 2020 that have been stored in the fridge. We saw 90+% germination on most.
